The Week That Was College Basketball: January 26, 2009

spartycbbThe semi-pro ranks of basketball has been hoppin’ with action lately. Before we give you a report on the happenings throughout the conferences and around the country from the previous week, let’s look at where we are in the season.

A dominant team has yet to take control of that #1 spot and all of the undefeateds have been defeated. Using this season’s trends as evidence, I’d make the prediction that different teams will bounce in and out of that spot for the next month and a half until tourney time. Let me repeat something; we’re only about a month and a half away from conference tournaments, people. The season is rapidly moving along and Selection Sunday is just around the corner. Let’s observe where we’ve been and then talk about where we are. Continue reading

The Week That Was College Basketball: January 19, 2009

spartycbbCatchy and original title, huh?  Now that football season is completely over, we are going to turn our attention to the college hardwood.  We are at the halfway point of the season with conference play well underway; so, let’s take a trip around the country and see what’s happening in college basketball.  This won’t be too much of a review of the past week, but an opportunity to get you caught up on what is happening across the country. Clown, Interrupted

bigxiiKeeping with yesterday’s idea, we decided to bring in outspoken Florida fan, clown, from majorleaguejerk.com to give us his thoughts on how excited he was to see his Gator team win. Actually, clown hates the Gators; he pledges allegiance to that team most sports fans refer to as “the other UT.”

I made several wagers on this year’s bowl season including this one, which I fortunately won.  Clown and I bet a post at each other’s respective blog-place of employment on the outcome of the BCS championship game: if the Big XII representative wins, I post at MLJ and if the SEC representative wins, he posts here.  As I’m sure you’re aware by now, the SEC representative blew up the Big XII representative.  Therefore, clown honors our bet below…I think.

Big 12 = Overrated

There are two things that so many champioship teams have in common. The first being that they run the ball extremely well.  Be it from a Power I, a single back set, an option offense, or a wildcat formation, the team that runs wins.  The other thing is defense.  Championship teams play great defense.  Last night, Oklahoma played better than expected defense.  It was okay, but not good.  Florida played great defense.

Everyone points to Oklahoma wasting two chances in the red zone and taking control of the game.  There is no doubt in my mind that if they were playing against a Big 12 school last night, they get in the end zone those occasions.  It was not questionable play-calling that spoiled those opportunities. It was swarming Gator defense.  Florida played great defense all year long, except with one major hiccup against Ole Miss.  Oklahoma was trying to do what they normally did all year, but Florida’s defense stepped up and made the plays against them that no one in the Big 12 could do all year

People became enamored with the great offenses of the Big 12 this year.  They sure were fun to watch for most, no doubt.  They were good, not taking anything away from that. However, the stats were amplified by the porous defense that was played in the Big 12 all year.   Ole Miss lit up Texas Tech.  A below avg Northwestern lost in OT but out-gained Missouri.  Texas beat tOSU in the last 10 secs, but did not look like the offensive juggernaut we saw all year long and when he wasn’t sitting on the bench, Beanie Wells could not be stopped.

The Big 12 did go 4-3 in bowl games, not bad, but was not good against the spread this season, going 2-5.  That latter record was more indicative of how they (more specifically, their offenses) were overrated going into this bowl season.

Now go ahead and tell me how wrong I am.

The Morning After: January 9, 2008

Tim Tebow Shows Nic Harris His School Spirit

There is nothing else worth covering in the first post for today.  The Gators showed the world that a good defense will always beat a good offense.
Is a certain someone still sticking by his guns that the offenses of the Big 12 were the reason the defenses were so bad in the Big 12?

*UPDATED*  Florida claimed the top spot in the AP poll, with Utah finishing  #2.  Michigan State finished #24.  I will take it.

TWTWCFB Special: Head-to-Head; It’s Science

Since it doesn’t really make a lot of sense to compare two groups that never see the field opposite each other, such as a comparison of two offenses or two defenses, we’re going to look at the Gators Offense vs. the Sooners Defense and the Sooners Offense vs. the Gators Defense.  This will determine who wins tonight and it’ll be correct.
