2008 Pool Challenge Champ: JB

spartyball1Congrats to Commenter JB who takes home the 2008 NFL Pool Challenge crown….by .6 points over Sparty. Sparty came on strong at the end, but JB’s season long lead was helped in the final few weeks by the elimination of players who could not overtake the leaders for the final spots…Sparty was able to pick up 10 points in the final two weeks to come close to catching JB who had not gotten any points since about week 13. But JB had won enough during the regular season to keep him at bay. Continue reading

NBA Studs & Duds 12/31

Not that many great games last night in the NBA. The most notable one was the Cavs/Heat match-up. LeBron continues to preform at an incredible level on his birthday but not win a game. As LeBron turned 24 last night, he scored 38 but it was Stud Mario Chalmers who led the Heat to the victory. The Suns managed to beat the Grizzlies without Steve Nash who was out due to back spasms. Congratulations once again to Shaq who (though he did come up 6th and therefore just off of the Stud list for today) led the Suns to the win while passing Oscar Robertson to move into 8th on the all time scoring list. Next up on the list is Hakeem who he should pass in about 14 games and then Elvin Hayes about 21 games later followed by Moses Malone about 6 games after that. So in about 41 games, Shaq should be 5th behind only Jabbar, Malone, Jordan, and Wilt. Stud CP3 recorded a triple double as the Hornets beat the Wizards. The Celtics lost to the Blazers making it their 5th loss. They now have more losses since Christmas than before. The Kings also beat the Clippers on two free throws by Brad Miller with 45 seconds left because nobody could score afterwards. Not surprising because of the teams playing. Check after the jump for the full lists and highlights. Continue reading

2008 Sparty Awards

We are drawing to a close here in 2008, so we thought it would be appropriate to sparty-awardhandout some hardware to the “Best Of” at Sparty & Friends.

I want to thank everyone, from the writers to the readers for making Sparty & Friends a success in 2008.  We were only around for the 2nd half of the year, and already feels much longer than that.  I look forward to venturing into the future with all of you.

I made all the picks, you gotta a problem with it?  Tough, you are wrong.

The Morning After: New Year’s Eve Edition

My esteemed colleague Mr. Mizerle06 and I don’t see eye to eye. New Year’s Eve rocks! No, not for the party hard, waking up in someone’s yard with your boxers on your head type reasons. It’s just another day? Not even close! It’s day you can shoot off a boat load of fireworks and the cops just have to ignore it because they can’t ticket everyone. It’s a day where you can sing “Auld Lang Syne” and not get your ass kicked for being too fruity. It’s a day where watching Ryan Seacrest host a ball drop doesn’t make you feel kinda wierd.

It’s also the day where you start the ham hocks boilin’ so your greens and hoppin’ john are perfectly soaked and stewed for New Years day, plus you gotta smoke the ribs for a few hours, so you don’t have to wake up as early on New Year’s Day…MMMmmm…

And to cap it all off, you can make a crap resolution that you’ll never follow through with.

My New Year’s resolution? I’m gonna stop being so darn cool…take that conformity. Continue reading
